Antonia: When Art Speaks
Working as an Art Speak intern for the past two years has taught me a lot about the world I live in as well as myself. In Art Speak, one of the primary focuses is to facilitate and create drop-in art activities that relate to the current special exhibitions. I find this to be the most rewarding activity we do in the program, for we have the opportunity to see the scope of our actions. The general process of a drop-in art activity starts at research. We interns do extensive research on the pieces in the current exhibit. Second we start to brainstorm and collaborate on potential art project that relate to the pieces we have selected. Then we start to prototype the activity and modify it. Then we create a prompt and write up of the activity and gather the material for visitor to make it. Then on a first or third Sunday we facilitate the activity. This is where the real magic happens. Never would I think I would see the art project I created be the highlight of a family’s museum visit or be a small child’s first experience using art materials to create something. The process I just described makes me see the power of my actions, that I am able to create something that will help open up people's minds to the exhibition and ultimately to new experiences.
