Julianna: Favorite Artist
Somebody I’m currently enjoying the artwork of is Takashi Murakami. He’s a Japanese contemporary artist who works mainly with blurring the line between ‘high’ arts and ‘low’ arts. With flat, glossy surfaces, his work can be considered ‘superflat’, a term he had coined for his art. I love that his style blends traditional aspects of his Japanese culture while also making it modern and in line with society today.
My favorite art piece by him is "Transcendent Attacking a Whirlwind" (2017). Not only does it use the historical format of the hand scroll, but it tells a story, which is the most important part of it. He uses bright and vivid colors, but unexpected shapes and style to make it his own, and very distinctly so.
I was lucky enough to see him a year ago at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where he had a featured collection. It was truly an amazing experience to see all of these grand artworks before my eyes. The detail was truly unparalleled.
